Drinking buttermilk or eating curd, which is better? We have all heard about probiotic drinks as it is a familiar word. Curd and buttermilk both have lactobacillus which are healthy bacteria and are great probiotics.
The trillions of bacteria living in our intestines must be healthy for us to be healthy. Our mouth is the home of thousands of bacteria. The bacteria living in the saliva go to the intestine when we swallow them. We usually drink 1.5 litres of saliva every day. So, the microorganisms in saliva must be healthy.
If that is healthy then the microorganisms in the intestines will be healthy. If the microorganisms in the intestine are healthy then our whole body will be healthy. For this buttermilk is very important. Curd and buttermilk both have lactobacillus which are healthy bacteria and are extremely good for the Gut. It helps in preventing Gut Dysbiosis.
Curd/yoghurt has both fat and Casein protein which may be hard to digest for some people and may cause allergies due to indigestion. Whereas in buttermilk the fat is removed, and the protein and lactate sugar are present which is easy to digest.
Traditionally after a feast, everyone at the end of the meal will drink buttermilk. They will have the main course of food, then dessert and then finally will drink probiotic-rich buttermilk as it is a healthy probiotic drink.
Buttermilk is not drunk in the beginning because the acid in our stomach will kill the microorganisms. That is why after the meal is finished, the buttermilk or curd is had as the microorganisms in it are not killed and they will go to the gut and live healthily.
When we have dessert, the sweetener will get trapped in between the teeth and creates dental issues. In recent times a greater percentage of the younger population has a lot of dental problems compared to a decade back.
When drunk after having a dessert, buttermilk is a great probiotic drink which prevents dental damage as the good bacteria dominate the dental damaging bacteria, which grows well using sweet sugar.
Certain herbs like ginger, coriander leaves, small onion, etc., are added which is very good for the health. In the olden days, guests were offered buttermilk made from A2 milk added with curry leaves and lemon leaves as a drink which is very healthy and cooling for the body.
These days Panchakavya (five products of milk) are offered which contains buttermilk along with other ingredients as a cure for many diseases. It is always good to have buttermilk every day as it is a great probiotic drink which is good for our body and health.
