    Why is it important to test the Grains and Pulses that we consume everyday?

Due to increasing demand and to make more profit whole grains and pulses are highly adulterated. Toxic preservatives and pesticides are added in order to increase the shelf life of the whole grains and pulses and to prevent them from insects. Colors like metanil yellow are used to make pulses look brighter and they are injurious to health. Strong chemicals like Captan, carbon tetrachloride, Malathion, Parathion, DDT, Dieldrin, Thiram, Endrin, Heptachlor, Maneb, Methoxychlor, 2, 6-dichloro, 4-nitroaniline, pentachloronitrobenzene, hexachlorobenzene, Demeton, Phorate, and Carbophenothion are also used these days.

Prolonged consumption of these adulterated grains and pulses lead to cancer, diabetes, cholesterol, heart diseases, etc. So it is very important to test for adulteration and pesticides to safeguard our body. Testing grains and pulses is essential for ensuring the safety, quality, and nutritional value of these staple foods. Some of the reasons why testing is important is.

Quality Control:Testing ensures that grains and pulses meet certain quality standards. This includes aspects such as moisture content, foreign matter (like stones, dirt, or insects), and purity.

    Methods to test Grains and Pulses

Physical Inspection: This involves visually inspecting grains and pulses for quality attributes such as size, shape, color, and presence of foreign matter like stones, dirt, or insects.
Moisture Content Determination: Moisture content is a crucial factor in determining the quality and shelf life of grains and pulses. Methods for determining moisture content include oven drying, moisture meters, and Karl Fischer titration.
